A defence official has confirmed that the MoD is actively investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified matters in all vehicles.
Security Guidance for Defence Personnel
In a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.
He stated that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified level in any vehicle, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Defence Background
The announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This broader defence environment underscores the significance of strong measures and caution in all areas of official operations, including transport usage to discussions practices.
