Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
