This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.
We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about how we choose to love one another.
A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.
The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
